  • January marks the beginning of new year’s resolutions,  shaking off the excesses of the festive season with healthy eating and exercising. For others, it is a chance to regroup and go entirely alcohol-free for the month of January.

This year, we propose an alternative, which is to be selective with what you drink this month, and we have 4 great dry wines for you to enjoy your own version of “Dry” January.

    1. Domaine Drouhin - Cloudline Pinot Noir
Domaine Drouhin – Cloudline Pinot Noir

Hailing from Willamette Valley in Oregon, Domaine Drouhin is a well-established US partnership with French estate, Maison Joseph Drouhin, founded in 1880 in Beaune, Burgundy. A dry wine, it has forward cherry and red berry fruit notes, with earth, leather, and a ruby red color. Great with poultry or venison. Find this in our Adventurer red and mixed subscription packs.

Hester Creek - Merlot Block 2 Reserve
Hester Creek – Merlot Block 2 Reserve

This respected BC winery has been around since 1996, although the grapes are older, dating back to 1968. This vintage of Merlot has average tannins, so can be enjoyed young, but has a steady acidity and is very dry. Notes of cherry and red fruit, it is also oaky, with vanilla and toffee notes. Can be aged 3-5 years. Pairs perfectly with lamb popsicles. Get this wine in our Adventurer red and mixed, 4 and 6 packs.

    Quinta do Vallado – Touriga
Quinta do Vallado – Touriga Franca

Portugal has been making fantastic wines for generations and are especially well known for their dessert wines (Port & Madeira). Many folks haven’t tried their dryer wines, which is a shame as there are some real gems waiting to be discovered, such as this well-balanced red. The winery hails back to 1716 and is, therefore, one of the oldest in the Douro Valley. Concentrated aromas of red fruit with hints of violets. A solid tannic base and long finish. Great with tomato sauce-based pasta dishes. This can be found in our Adventurer red and mixed, 4 and 6 packs.

Ken Forrester Old Vine Chenin Blanc
Ken Forrester Old Vine Chenin Blanc

South Africa has some exceptionally great value wines, and this Chenin Blanc is no exception. With notes of apple, pineapple, pear, and melon, with oak and vanilla, there is a pleasant minerality and refreshing moderate acidity. I would pair this with steelhead trout, or pasts with tiger prawns. Also stands up to some spice such as Thai curry.

Whatever you decide to do in January, remember to enjoy yourself during the process! It can be challenging to stick to a new year’s resolution, so finding an alternative that works for you is what matters most.
